Ryan Stoa Honored as Outstanding Direct Support Professional by MOHR

Staff Member, Ryan Stoa, Holding an award

Each year, the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation (MOHR) honors direct support professionals (DSPs) from across the state for their exceptional service on behalf of people with disabilities.

“This year’s honorees exceed the call of duty to support the people they serve,” explains Robin Harkonen, president of MOHR. “We were deeply impressed with their accomplishments which range from designing programs to helping people with disabilities interact with active-duty military members, to improving medical outcomes for individuals they serve, to purchasing adaptive instruments and expanding access to music opportunities.”

Since stepping into his role, Ryan has exceeded expectations and become a vital part of the Achieve experience. He’s introduced a vibrant lineup of weekly events – Art, Food, Exercise, and Music Groups -that participants eagerly anticipate. His creativity shines through activities like the Paper Airplane Contest, Minnesota mascot mock election, and visits from local police and firefighters. Partnering with Anoka County SHIP, he secured grants for outdoor games, fitness equipment, ADA-accessible picnic tables, and raised garden beds. He also collaborated with our Behavior Specialist to launch a Social Skills Group and helped organize the Achiever’s Club, empowering participants to lead and shape new activities at Achieve.

Achieve Services CEO, Rob Lane, states, “Ryan’s ability to inspire, organize, and uplift has made him an invaluable member of our team. He has truly found his niche in a role that allows his strengths to shine, and in doing so, he has created countless opportunities for the individuals we serve to grow, connect, and have fun. Congratulations Ryan on the well-deserved honor of Outstanding Direct Support Professional.”

This year’s awards aligned with National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, September 8 – 14, which honors all DSPs for providing essential services to people with disabilities. Their work encompasses individualized support including employment readiness and job acquisition, meal preparation, medication assistance, personal care, and life skills training, mobility, work and life enrichment opportunities, and help with daily tasks. All of these services allow individuals with disabilities to stay connected in the community, join the workforce, and live impactful lives.

“All five of this year’s honorees approach their work with passion, creativity, flexibility, and a high degree of self-motivation that has allowed them to go above and beyond for people in their communities,” adds Harkonen.
